Test Anxiety

 

Test anxiety is a type of performance anxiety. It is like when some people get nervous speaking to large crowdsAnxiety associated with tests is very common and quite normal. Some amount of anxiety can help to be alert during the test. However, when the level of anxiety is so high that it takes away the ability to think clearly and perform best during the test, that is a problem.

Test anxiety occurs for a number of reasons and isn’t the same for everyone. Some people fear exams because entry fear failure. Others get anxious for totally different reasons.

For some people, the fear of tests starts well before the day of the test. This is called anticipatory anxiety. While some people get anticipatory anxiety a few hours before the start of the test, others experience it days or even weeks before they know they must take the test. Even worse, some people have panic attacks when an unscheduled test is given.

 

 

 

Sources of test anxiety

 

The most common reasons are:

  • Fear of failure
    While the pressure to perform can act as a motivator, it can also be devastating to individuals who tie their self-worth to the outcome of a test.
  • Lack of preparation
    Waiting until the last minute or not studying at all can leave individuals feeling anxious and overwhelmed.
  • Poor test history
    Previous problems or bad experiences with test-taking can lead to a negative mindset and influence performance on future tests.
