What Is Agoraphobia?

The word agoraphobia originates from the ancient Greek word “agora,” referring to a place of assembly or marketplace. Agoraphobia is defined as anxiety about being in particular places or situations where escape might be difficult or help might not be available, should a panic attack or panic-like symptoms arise. Commonly feared situations include using public transportation, going to theaters, being away from home, and being in crowds. Agoraphobia leads to avoidance of these situations, or great distress when in these situations if they cannot be avoided.

Most people develop agoraphobia after having had one or more panic attacks, causing them to fear further attacks and avoid the situation in which the attack occurred.

Signs and symptoms of agoraphobia

Agoraphobia can manifest itself as a combination of fears, feelings and bodily symptoms.

Common fears associated with agoraphobia are:

  • Fear of spending time alone
  • Fear of being in crowded places
  • Fear of open spaces
  • Fear of being in places where escape might be hard, such as public transport and elevators
  • Fear of losing control in a public place
  • Fear of death

Someone with agoraphobia may experience the following feelings:

  • Detachment from others
  • Helplessness
  • Agitation
  • Loss of control
  • As though the body is not real
  • As though the environment is not real

People suffering from agoraphobia may become over-dependent on others, or remain housebound for long periods of time. In addition to these symptoms, people with agoraphobia can also experience the physical symptoms of panic attacks, such as:

  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Dizziness
  • Racing heart
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Upset stomach, nausea, and diarrhea
  • Flushing and chills
  • Choking

Especially those who experience panic attacks may change their behavior and how they function at home, school or work. They may try to avoid situations that could trigger off further attacks. They may become sad, depressed or even suicidal, and in some cases may abuse alcohol and other drugs. Many of those who suffer wait a long time until they ask for help. Don’t wait so long! After consulting your physician psychotherapy with hypnotherapy and Hypnobalancing™ can help you.

Self-hypnosis

Self-hypnosis has helped many patients with stress. Many sufferers usually report very quickly a noticeable improvement. Pondering, fears, mental and physical tension can be additionally reduced by self-hypnosis. Therefore, I teach my patients self-hypnosis to supplement the hypnosis sessions.

After positive trance experiences have been made with my support, self-hypnosis can be learned very quickly. This helps them to progress self-determined outside the therapy. It accelerates the process, deepens and consolidates the achievements. This also promotes the independence of the clients. A good therapist will be superfluous as soon as possible. Self-hypnosis is an excellent self-help method that can be used beyond the actual topic.

Smoking Cessation: Becoming Smoke-Free Is A Radical Lifestyle Change

Yes, becoming smoke-free is a radical lifestyle change. I support those who are willing to become smoke-free since 1998. Assisting smokers in successfully making that change is a highly rewarding endeavor for me providing smoking cessation interventions with Hypnobalancing. It is rewarding to witness the transformation clients go through as they gradually extract themselves from the stranglehold nicotine has on their daily routines and embrace the fresh outlook on their lives that lies ahead on the smoke-free path. It is also gratifying to know that for each smoker who is able to stay smoke-free, there are others in that person’s life who are happy and relieved to see their loved one choose health over the debilitating habit. Of course, the benefits of becoming smoke-free go beyond the individuals seeking treatment. Smoking cessation plays a key role in improving public health.

Step by step

Quitting is one thing, becoming smoke-free is quite another, and remaining smoke-free involves a fairly dramatic lifestyle change. Promoting lifestyle change as a successful aid to remaining smoke-free is an important focus of the process. This aspect of the process acknowledges the grief process and far-reaching changes that often occur in a person’s life as a result of giving up smoking. Therefore it is important to describe the change they are undertaking as quitting smoking, with its negative connotations of losing something, it is instead described as becoming smoke-free. Becoming smoke-free signals a process of gaining something. Clients are gaining the freedom to make lifestyle choices unfettered by the demands of nicotine dependence.

Hypnobalancing™

Incorporating the idea of lifestyle change in the 3 steps process with Hypnobalancing™ also acknowledges that for many of my clients smoking has played a significant role in their life and that new activity, beliefs, and coping strategies are going to be needed to take the place of the former smoking lifestyle. Having professional support when dealing with this lifestyle change helps my clients to reduce the risk of relapse through, by developing an awareness of how imbalances in lifestyle and some aspects of their previous lifestyle choices ﹣ before becoming smoke free ﹣ can threaten their attempts to remain abstinent, and, also adopt ways to address these imbalances in order to promote a smoke-free lifestyle.

Speeches and Performance Under Pressure

Blocked by Performance Anxiety?

Performance anxiety is a fairly broad term. For some of my clients, it refers to the ability to perform well under pressure in sports, making a presentation, or excelling in public. For others, it refers to sexual performance, where those that have anxiety tend to worry about how they’ll perform to such a degree that they either experience some type of sexual dysfunction or fail to enjoy their sexual experiences. These anxiety types have few things in common. This article will focus on speeches and performance under pressure.

Performance anxiety can be a serious problem. It can create other types of anxiety, including social anxiety, and in some cases it can be a symptom of other anxiety disorders that bleed in to your confidence in social situations.

How to overcome performance anxiety?

An important part of reducing performance anxiety in public situations is practicing. The more and longer you practice the more these performances become instinctual. Artists and speaker with stage fright that struggle under pressure are more likely to perform the more they experience the pressure filled situations. Those that are afraid of public speaking tend to improve when they have performed numerous speaking events. This is true for many people but not for everyone.

A big part of how we address these issues comes from self-talk. Often the problem with this type of performance anxiety is that the mind tends to focus on the negative, and tell itself worst case scenarios. We need to address the way we feel about our performance so that we are not sidelined by mistakes or stressed over the potential to make them. With the best intend some articles will tell you that you only need positive thinking to solve your performance anxiety. This works only for a few people because when the fear is deep rooted in the unconscious you have to address it directly. Therefore it needs profound therapeutic work to let go of those limiting beliefs, habits and sometimes traumatic experiences from the past.

Sources of Anxiety

Anxiety results from many factors and they can all interact. There is a biopsychosocial theory of anxiety’s origins; anxiety has sources in our biology, our psychological strategies for coping with stress, and life events, including our most important human relationships.

We humans developed the capacity to feel anxiety for a reason. Anxiety mobilizes us. Anxiety prepares us to fight an attacker or flee from imminent danger.

We still live with an internal alarm system. We still have the same brain like our ancestors.

The problem comes when anxiety turns into a perpetual series of false alarms. This occurs when anxiety happens for no apparent reason so often that you find it increasingly hard just to make it through the day. Sometimes, in fact, the mere thought that we are unsafe is enough to trigger the fight-or-flight response. Some of us have such thoughts more than others, meaning that our alarm system is especially sensitive. This puts us at extra risk for anxiety disorders.

These common factors can cause anxiety:

  • Traumatic events
  • Caffeine
  • Food sensitivities
  • Cigarettes
  • Stress at work or in the academic field
  • Stress in a personal relationship
  • Financial stress
  • Stress from an emotional trauma such as the loss of a loved one
  • Stress from a serious medical illness
  • Side effect of medication or drugs like alcohol
  • Symptom of a medical illness
  • Skipping meals
  • Food supplements
  • Lack of oxygen
  • Dehydration
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Genetic dispositions
  • Age
  • Negative thinking
  • Unconscious cues
