Anxiety disorders are very common
We all experience anxiety. For example, speaking in front of a group can make us anxious, but that anxiety also motivates us to prepare and practice. Fear is an emotional response to an immediate threat and is more associated with a fight or flight reaction — either staying to fight or leaving to escape danger.
Anxiety disorders can cause people to try to avoid situations that trigger or worsen their symptoms.
The term “anxiety disorder” is a broad term. There is more than one anxiety disorder. They include but are not limited to fears, phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks to panic disorder, to obsessive-compulsive disorder.
In general, for a person to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, the fear, or anxiety must:
- Be out of proportion to the situation or age-inappropriate
- Hinder your ability to function normally
When you have anxiety, it’s common to feel like others don’t understand what you’re going through. Many of my clients reported that they felt a bit better when they learned that they are not alone.
Fear is a normal part of life
Yes, anxiety disorders are very common. It’s a normal part of life to experience occasional anxiety. Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress and can be beneficial in some situations. It can alert us to dangers and help us prepare and pay attention. But you may experience anxiety that is persistent, seemingly uncontrollable, and overwhelming. If it’s an excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it can be disabling. When anxiety interferes with daily activities, you may have an anxiety disorder.
Taboo
Unfortunately, few people talk about their symptoms. Anxiety is incredibly common, but it’s not just the extremely high numbers that are relevant. Only a low number of people seek out treatment, and the even lower number of people that receive effective treatment. People may suffer for years before seeking help, sometimes avoiding the stigma attached to these types of mental health issues, and sometimes believing the common misconception that they are simply a sign of weakness or instability.
Good news
However, the best news I can offer as a therapist specialized in that field is that anxiety disorders are very well treatable in several ways. And the success rates are very high. I use hypnotherapy with Hynobalancing™ to help my clients.
Types of anxiety disorders
The five major types of anxiety disorders are:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Panic Disorder
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Social Phobia or Social Anxiety Disorder
What causes anxiety disorders?
Anxiety disorders are thought to be caused by a combination of factors. Most anxious people are probably born with a genetic vulnerability to develop an anxiety disorder. Personality traits and responses to stressful life events may trigger the condition or make it worse.
