What is Agoraphobia?

The word agoraphobia originates from the ancient Greek word “agora,” referring to a place of assembly or marketplace. Agoraphobia is defined as anxiety about being in particular places or situations where escape might be difficult or help might not be available, should a panic attack or panic-like symptoms arise. Commonly feared situations include using public transportation, going to theaters, being away from home, and being in crowds. Agoraphobia leads to avoidance of these situations, or great distress when in these situations if they cannot be avoided.

Most people develop agoraphobia after having had one or more panic attacks, causing them to fear further attacks and avoid the situation in which the attack occurred.

Especially those who experience panic attacks may change their behavior and how they function at home, school or work. They may try to avoid situations that could trigger off further attacks. They may become sad, depressed or even suicidal, and in some cases may abuse alcohol and other drugs. Many of those who suffer wait a long time until they ask for help. Don’t wait so long! After consulting your physician psychotherapy with hypnotherapy and Hypnobalancing™ can help you.
